About the event
Celebrate Rastafari Month: Honoring Rasta and Indigenous Peoples
On April 22, 1966, Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie visited Jamaica. An enthusiastic crowd of thousands of people greeted him the airport in Jamaica’s capital, Kingston.
The Ethiopian resistance to Italian colonialism and later occupation, legendary in the Atlantic world, drew some of the attention, but it was the Jamaica’s Rastafari population who were particularly enthusiastic. Rastafari revered (and still revere) Haile Selassie as divine.
Join us this April as we celebrate Rastafari Month, a time to honor the rich heritage, culture, and contributions of the Rastafari movement and Indigenous peoples worldwide. Through a series of inspiring events, we will embrace the principles of unity, spirituality, and resistance while recognizing the deep connections between Rasta and Indigenous traditions.
